(Learning Goal 1) Is able to keep a baby safe in the crib.

(Learning Goal 2) Is able to keep a baby safe inside the home.

(Learning Goal 3) Knows how to keep a baby safe outside the home.

(Learning Goal 4) Is able to comfort a baby.

(Learning Goal 1) Is able to keep a baby safe in the crib.

     Expectations:
  1. Keeps baby crib away from windows.
  2. Crib mattress fits snugly.
  3. Uses non-plastic mattress covers.
  4. Describe why cribs need safety latches and locks.
  5. Uses a crib with slats no wider than 2-3 inches apart.
  6. Explain when to place and remove bumper pads.
  7. Explain when to remove mobiles and crib toys.
  8. Demonstrate the safest sleeping positions for a baby.

(Learning Goal 2) Is able to keep a baby safe inside the home.

     Expectations:
  1. Demonstrate baby proofing a home (e.g., removing unsafe and dangerous items from places a child can go or reach).
  2. Explain why a baby should not be left alone on a bed or changing table.
  3. Demonstrate safely heating baby bottles.
  4. Tell what foods to avoid the first year of life.
  5. Demonstrate feeding chair safety (e.g., high chair).
  6. Explain how to protect a baby from burns.
  7. Name several toys safe for babies.
  8. Explain the danger in tying a pacifier on a string around the baby’s neck.
  9. Describe your fire safety plan.
  10. Explain what to do if a baby swallows a poisonous substance.
  11. Describe the pros and cons of walkers and playpens.
  12. Avoid smoking cigarettes when in the same room as a child.
  13. Avoid using illegal drugs around child.

     Expectations:
  1. Explain how to select a safe car seat.
  2. Demonstrate installing a car seat safely.
  3. Demonstrate securing a child in a car seat safely.
  4. Tell why it is not okay to leave a baby in a car alone, even for a few minutes.
  5. Demonstrate how to use a stroller and baby carrier safely (e.g., proper securing of child).
  6. Describe how to get help if you or child is in danger.
  7. Describe how to perform CPR on an infant.
  8. Describe how to find shelter or safety in an emergency.
  9. Supervise child in and around water.
